Located in Texas, Houston is a vibrant and diverse city, home to a thriving Dawoodi Bohra community deeply rooted in faith and service. In this land, far from traditional centers of Islamic learning, the seed of hifz al-Qur’an al-Kareem was sown with sincerity and dedication. With time, consistent effort, and divine blessings, it began to flourish—growing into a blessed journey that continues to bear the fruits of huffaz.
In 2001 (1422 H), during his historic visit to America, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin RA expressed his desire for children in Houston and throughout America to progressively memorize the Qur’an in the United States. (Bayan Mubarak)
A Da‘i’s wish never remains unfulfilled. A seed sown in America, nurtured with vision and barakaat, has today grown into a tree bearing the fruits of huffaz.
The First Steps: Laying the Foundation
In 1426 H (2006), the ShehrAllah Hifz Program began in Houston. This marked the humble beginnings of an organised tahfeez in America. Four years after the blessed instruction, two dedicated khidmatguzaars arrived from Mahad al-Zahra, Surat, to initiate this noble effort. It was a small beginning—but one filled with sincerity, hope, and a deep sense of purpose.
Spreading the Effort: Growth Across America
By 1428 H (2008), the momentum had begun to build. A summer camp for hifz was organised in Houston, bringing together more than twenty participants. This initiative soon expanded, and annual hifz camps began taking place across various cities in North America. These were primarily short-term and vacation-based camps.
The following year, in 1429 H (2009), Shahzada Husain Burhanuddin saheb DM conducted the first ever al-Taiseer fi Hifz al-Qur’an al-Kareem seminar in Chicago. This was followed by additional seminars in Houston and New Jersey, further strengthening both understanding and methodology in the journey of hifz.
Strengthening the Roots: A Living Culture of the Qur’an
In 1430 H (2010), a new chapter unfolded. Live tasmee and tahfeez programs for the full year began in Houston. Across the United States, students increasingly gathered in masajid, reviving a traditional and spiritually enriching practice. What began quietly was now taking firm root.
From Program to Institution
What started as a low-profile initiative was never imagined to reach such heights. Today, hifz in Houston is not merely a program—it is a comprehensive institution, blending Deen and Dunya in a balanced and meaningful way.
A dedicated faculty leads this sacred tahfeez khidmat, supported by a remarkable community of nearly 130 individuals serving as visiting faculty—both in-person and online. Their contributions extend beyond hifz into academic, curricular, and extracurricular enrichment.
Beyond hifz: Nurturing Complete Individuals
Along with hifz sessions, students engage in Tadrees al-Kutub, gaining the opportunity to study sacred Islamic texts. These include: Jurisprudence, Islamic history, Qur’anic sciences, Maths, and Uloom Kauniyah subjects, which include: geography, physics, chemistry, and biology.
Alongside knowledge comes Tadeeb—the cultivation of character. The Qur’an itself calls towards noble character. The character development programs organised in our institute are inspired by the teachings of the Qur’an and the guidance of Syedna Aali Qadr Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS. These programs instil values and shape students into responsible individuals who serve humanity. At its core, the purpose of all education is to nurture good and conscientious citizens.
Balanced Development: Deen, Dunya, and Life Skills
Understanding the challenges students face in the current era, special care is taken to ensure a balanced life. Students are guided to maintain focus in both hifz and academics, develop structured routines, and engage in physical activities and games. A healthy body is essential for a healthy mind. Games are not only beneficial for physical well-being; they also teach valuable lessons in teamwork, encouraging participation and fostering a spirit of inclusion. Both individual and team sports are promoted. An annual sports day is also organised almost every year, where outstanding participants are recognised to encourage a healthy sporting spirit.
In Houston, emphasis is also placed on life skills—through activities such as cooking, roti making, creative competitions, and STEM-based projects—ensuring well-rounded, holistic development.
Reaching New Milestones
Houston Tahfeez proudly continues to grow, with the number of huffaz steadily increasing (figures to be added and the year of the first hafiz). Each hafiz is a testament to that original blessed wish of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin RA and Syedan Aali Qadr Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS.
A significant milestone was achieved with the inauguration of Fakhri Makan (date to be added), a dedicated residential facility where students from across America and beyond can reside and complete their hifz. Designed with care, it provides an environment inspired by the hostels of Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah, fostering discipline, focus, and spiritual growth.
Another remarkable achievement is the establishment of Nuzul al-Barakah (hostel for female students), enabling girls from various regions to reside and complete their memorisation of the Qur’an—fulfilling the teaching of RasulAllah SA:
طلب العلم فريضة على كل مسلم ومسلمة
Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim man and woman.
Looking Ahead: A Continuing Journey
Houston Tahfeez continues to strive towards fulfilling the sacred vision of Syedna Aali Qadr Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS—that one day, the number of huffaz reaches 100,000, Insha’Allah. This noble vision serves as a constant source of motivation, inspiring every individual to remain steadfast in the path of hifz. In an era where distractions are many, and purposes often drift, even the memorisation of a small Surah from the Quran can become challenging—yet this vision keeps hearts connected and efforts alive.
This journey is a living reminder that when efforts are sincere and guided properly, even the smallest seed can grow into a tree that benefits generations.
Houston, home to a vibrant community of Dawoodi Bohras in America, has been blessed with a personality who continuously guides the community to remain close to the Da‘i through sincere and dedicated khidmat. Ever-present in the service of the community, his unwavering support for every hifz initiative stands as a testament to his commitment. With pride and gratitude, the community remembers Mukasir al-Dawat Syedi Malik al-Ashtar bs Shujauddin saheb DM.
We pray that Allah grants him a healthy life under the pious shadow of Syedna Aali Qadr Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS, and grants our beloved Aqa Maula TUS a long, healthy, and prosperous life until the Day of Qiyamat. Ameen.
