Carrying a baby is such an amazing feeling in itself. Every woman wishes to experience this once in her lifetime. Motherhood is a journey right from that tinniest cell that emerges in her womb to the fully grown wonder of Almighty who turns this period into a roller coaster ride for every mother. Why not cherish and celebrate this phase with the utmost care and love towards one’s body which would not only transform from piling up those extra kilos but also uprooting a sea of emotions.
Trying to fit in the old clothes, turning and twisting in bed to find a comfortable sleeping position, bulky waist, and hips to accommodate in the office chair, hiding the baby bump in the initial phase with a stole, following the chimes and rituals of our forefathers, remembering the next appointment with the doctor and mesmerizing to the doppler sound of heartbeats of the little gem growing inside the uterus, fighting back pain and stretch marks, googling the errands of articles on pregnancy and childbirth, seeking the attention of the partner and family, satisfying the different cravings over a variety of foods, getting pissed off with the annoying smells and irritants which leave you nauseating, popping pills to keep those calcium, folic acid and iron levels in check, gloomy mornings when you wish to quit work, awaited weekends when you get to pamper yourself.. such are the never ceasing experiences of pregnancy!
In this fast-paced world today, where technology has taken a wider leap, a click on the phone will dive you into a myriad of apps guiding you from how to check your baby’s growth to how to indulge in nutritious food and how to calm down and meditate to push through this jovial yet perturbed journey. In this world full of temptation to look skinny and young, who would not wish to give oneself airs by reshaping the post-pregnancy body into a fitter and healthier one. Here comes the role of the Pregnancy workout which helps you to lace up your shoes with that unborn sprog laying in your tummy.
The most commonly asked question by a mother or the family member is, “How safe it is to exercise during pregnancy?” The most affirming answer is, “It’s not only safe in most of the normal pregnancies but also an essential thing to be done!” A regular exercise program during pregnancy will not only help you to relive the back pain and discomfort but also alleviate your stress and make you feel at your best. It reduces fatigue, helps you perform your daily chores with ease reduces the risk of other complications like gestational diabetes and unnecessary weight gain, it helps to maintain a good posture while keeps you active and adherent to your routine as most of us are working women who has to cope up with work and home, it prepares for labor and smoothens the process of childbirth, it overthrows all the fears associated with this journey and beyond.

However, there are several do’s and don’ts to be followed as per the guidelines of your doctor and you should never be exercising without the supervision of your Physical Therapist. A well fabricated trimester wise program is designed for each prenatal client by the specialist (Physiotherapist) thereby, making it safe and fun for each pregnant woman.
If exercise was never in your schedule, do not start with any strenuous or unguided workout during pregnancy. Although, you are a perfect candidate to incorporate an exercise program during your pregnancy, provided you have consulted your doctor. 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day is recommended for all pregnant women unless you have any severe complications. An integrated exercise program including aerobics, stretching, strength and core training, Kegels, yoga, relaxation, and meditation will help you to have the most enriching experience of being pregnant with the glow of good health and stress-free pregnancy.
Beyond all the positive effects exercise have during pregnancy and childbirth, I would like to specifically focus on Post- Partum Depression (PPD). If having a baby is an enthralling experience for both the sexes, it might also trigger an emotion which is unexpected- ‘depression’. Most new moms experience it and can be expressed as anxiety, sleep disorder, crying spells, mood disorder, etc. It may last from few days to few weeks for many but may extend to months and years too. If you have exercised during pregnancy and had a good birthing experience, it’s less common to get affected by this emotional outbreak. Also, exercising post pregnancy is equally important to fight and overcome it.
We work with both the parents during this journey of pregnancy and post-pregnancy because it’s not just the mother who’s carrying the baby but also the father who is waiting for the arrival of his child. Hence, partner workout helps to go a long way in motivating and connecting the parents with the baby during this phase and after childbirth. Let’s educate ourselves and our expecting mothers’ and fathers’ around us to take up a proper exercise and fitness regime during and after pregnancy and bloom in the the feeling of parenthood with grace and proclivity for the new bundle of joy!
